What are Dermal Fillers?

As we get older, our skin’s elasticity begins to wane. Collagen production subsides and we lose the vital components that keep our skin supple and pliant, leaving behind a dull, flat appearance that can make us look older than we feel. But it’s possible to restore lost volume and reclaim plump, youthful features with dermal fillers, a rejuvenation treatment that injects a gel-like mixture beneath the skin to defy the signs of aging. Safe, effective and minimally-invasive, dermal fillers add structure and fullness to the face with no downtime or recovery. Often used as an alternative to surgical procedures such as the facelift, brow lift or cheek implants, dermal fillers can treat a variety of concerns with the following benefits:

  • Smooth out wrinkles and creases
  • Reduce marionette lines, laugh lines or frown lines
  • Augment the lips and cheeks
  • Revitalize hollow, sagging skin
  • Diminish the visibility of recessed scars
  • Rejuvenate the hands
  • Eliminate vertical lip lines
  • Enhance facial contours

While noninvasive creams, serums, and rejuvenation treatments may temporarily minimize the signs of aging, they don’t provide the same outstanding results that dermal fillers do. That’s why so many are turning to this safe, effective treatment for a more youthful appearance — dermal fillers can take years off your face by adding volume where you need it most, ensuring natural-looking results that are personalized to your skin care needs.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

Dermal fillers are injectable products made with hyaluronic acid and other skin-plumping ingredients that add fullness and volume to treated areas. There are numerous fillers available that are formulated to target specific skin concerns, and each has its own unique texture, density and molecular structure for highly precise results. No matter which formula is used, however, dermal fillers require a combination of skill, knowledge and training to produce a beautiful, natural-looking outcome that complements your facial contours.

The dermal fillers used at Broward ENT & Aesthetics contain hyaluronic acid or poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), biocompatible ingredients won’t affect muscle movement or numb your face. When injected beneath the skin, these solutions replace lost collagen to instantly fill in wrinkles and add volume back to deflated areas, lasting a year or more before being safely absorbed by the body. The duration of your results will depend on a number of factors, but Dr. DuMornay and his aestheticians will develop a customized treatment schedule to keep your skin looking great for longer.

Are Dermal Fillers Right for Me?

Dermal fillers are a quick, effective treatment for a range of skin concerns but are most often used to restore a plump, vibrant appearance and reduce the signs of aging. Dermal fillers can also be used to replace lost volume in the lips or hands, fill in scars and other skin depressions, and correct contour deficiencies to add fullness to the face. Whatever your aesthetic goals, Dr. DuMornay and his team of skin care experts can apply various techniques to produce your desired outcome and will develop a customized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

There are no age, gender or skin type restrictions with this treatment, so if you’re interested in dermal fillers and want to learn more, you’re likely a good candidate if you:

  • Have moderate-to-severe facial lines, folds or wrinkles
  • Want to replenish lost volume for a youthful appearance
  • Don’t want your facial expressions to look stiff or frozen
  • Prefer to avoid surgical treatments or harsh chemicals
  • Aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients
  • Are open to maintenance treatments for lasting results
  • Want quick, natural-looking results with no downtime

Ideal candidates should also have reasonable expectations and no active skin conditions that could affect treatment results. If you have other concerns like expression lines or age spots that can’t be addressed with dermal fillers, you can combine this treatment with BOTOX®, laser resurfacing and other procedures for a more comprehensive rejuvenation effect.

What Dermal Fillers are available?

Broward ENT & Aesthetics offers a wide array of treatment options for those looking to rejuvenate their skin with dermal fillers. The subtle differences between each formula can produce varied results, and the assortment of products we offer ensures the right match for your skin care needs. The dermal fillers we offer at our location in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, include:

Sculptra®

Sculptra® is an injectable dermal filler that contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a collagen stimulator that helps reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. It is also an effective treatment for cellulite and wrinkles on the elbows, chest, and knees. Sculptra® is one of the most durable dermal fillers, with results lasting up to 24 months.

Restylane®

Restylane® has a long track record of success as the first dermal filler available in the United States. Made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring substance found in the body that helps the skin retain moisture, Restylane® minimizes the signs of aging by smoothing out lines and creases, plumping up the cheeks and adding volume to the lips and hands. Restylane® can last for 12 to 18 months, or up to six months when used in the hands.

Juvéderm®

Juvéderm® is an advanced collection of dermal fillers made with hyaluronic acid, precisely formulated to address specific signs of aging. When injected beneath the skin’s surface, Juvéderm® can smooth out lines and wrinkles, add volume to the lips and contour the cheeks. Compared to other fillers, Juvéderm® is most often used on the cheeks and around the mouth or lips to reduce the signs of aging. Results can last for 12 to 24 months, depending on the formula.

Belotero Balance®

Belotero Balance® is another injectable dermal filler made with hyaluronic acid. With unique properties that allow it to integrate and adapt quickly into the skin, Belotero Balance® is effective at treating deeper lines and folds around the nose and mouth. If you’re bothered by nasolabial folds that leave you looking aged and tired, Belotero Balance® may be the right dermal filler for you. Results typically last between six to 12 months.

Revanesse Versa®

A relatively new dermal filler, Revanesse Versa is a hyaluronic acid-based formula that uses smaller particles for smoother results. It is particularly effective for delicate areas around the eyes and lips but can also treat more severe facial wrinkles and nasolabial folds. Results can last for up to 12 months.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

Dermal fillers are a quick and simple procedure, often taking less than half an hour to complete. However, this will vary depending on your goals, treatment areas and the number of injections you’ll be receiving. Dr. DuMornay and his aesthetic team will review this information with you before proceeding, as well as thoroughly evaluate your facial features to identify the optimal injection sites. Each injection site is chosen based on your unique anatomy and strategically placed to deliver the best possible results with minimal discomfort.

When you’re ready to proceed, the dermal filler will then be carefully injected beneath the skin in targeted areas with a fine needle. Injections are generally painless and last just a few seconds, but you may feel a brief pinch at the injection site. Some formulas contain a numbing agent to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure, and additional anesthesia or a nerve blocker may be used for deeper or more sensitive areas. Once enough filler has been injected to achieve your desired outcome, we will carefully massage and evaluate the area to ensure beautiful, symmetrical results.

After your treatment, you may experience mild swelling, bruising or irritation at the injection sites, but this is normal and will diminish over the next few days. There is no downtime or recovery associated with wrinkle fillers, so you’ll be able to resume all normal activities and return home immediately after your appointment. If you have questions or concerns following your treatment, don’t hesitate to contact our office right away.

Dermal Filler Results

Dermal fillers begin to work immediately, filling in areas where sagging, wrinkling or volume loss has occurred for visibly smoother skin. As the fillers settle into place, even more dramatic results will begin to develop over the next few weeks, which can last for 6 to 24 months depending on the brand and treatment location. Most formulas provide enhancement for up to a year, but the procedure can be repeated as needed to maintain your results. Dr. DuMornay and his aesthetic team will develop a customized treatment schedule to keep your skin looking great year-round, with periodic touch-ups to further prolong your results.
