What is sinusitis?
Your sinuses are air-filled cavities found along both sides of your nose, running from the bottom of your nose up to the area above both eyes. Each sinus is lined with membranes that make mucus.
Typically, mucus drains through a small opening in each sinus and flows into your nasal passages, where it lubricates your nose and helps filter out dust and bacteria.
Sinusitis, or rhinitis, occurs when the sinus lining becomes inflamed. When the lining swells, your sinuses become blocked, mucus gets trapped in your sinus, and an infection develops.
What is a balloon sinuplasty?
When sinusitis becomes chronic — lasts longer than 12 weeks — despite conservative treatment, Dr. DuMornay may recommend an in-office treatment called balloon sinuplasty.
Balloon sinuplasty treats chronic sinusitis through your nostrils, providing long-term relief without the need for surgery.
During balloon sinuplasty, Dr. DuMornay applies a local anesthetic and then threads a small instrument holding a deflated balloon through your nasal passages to the blocked sinus opening.
When the balloon is in place, it’s inflated, gently expanding the sinus opening. Dr. DuMornay flushes the sinus with saline to remove mucus, then deflates and removes the balloon, leaving the sinus clean and open.
What is chronic rhinitis?
Rhinitis, the inflammation of your nasal passages, causes an ongoing runny nose, nasal congestion, and post-nasal drip. When rhinitis doesn’t clear up, it’s often due to a problem with the nerves in your nose. Dr. DuMornay offers ClariFix® to help with rhinitis.
What is ClariFix?
ClariFix is specially designed to treat chronic rhinitis using cryotherapy, or cold temperatures, to treat the inflamed tissues and interrupt abnormal nerve signals. The procedure only requires a local anesthetic and is performed in the office.
Following cryotherapy, four out of five patients experience long-lasting symptom relief.
What other procedures treat sinus problems?
In some cases, nasal congestion and inflammation develop from structural problems in your nose. Dr. DuMornay has extensive experience performing procedures to improve your nasal airways:
Septoplasty
A deviated septum refers to when the thin wall between your two nasal passages is displaced to one side. This can block your nose, interfere with breathing, and obstruct sinus openings. Septoplasty is surgery to repair a deviated septum.
Turbinate reduction
Turbinates are small bony structures inside your nose that help warm and moisturize air as it passes through your nose. They block your nasal passages when they get too large due to inflammation and swelling.
Dr. DuMornay surgically reduces the size of enlarged turbinates by removing part of the bone or using other techniques such as radiofrequency to shrink the tissues.
During the procedure, Dr. DuMornay uses IV sedation. This type of anesthesia lets you stay awake while receiving sedatives to help you relax and anesthetics to block pain.
