Formerly a taboo topic, emerging trends have brought vaginal rejuvenation procedures into the spotlight and more women are opening up to their doctors about the appearance of their labia. Although we often think of rejuvenating the face or breasts when it comes to plastic surgery, the aesthetics of more intimate areas are also a concern for many women. The vaginal lips can be stretched or torn during childbirth, while other women have naturally large or uneven labia that cause them discomfort or embarrassment. This can be especially pronounced during intercourse and exercise or when wearing tight-fitting clothing such as swimsuits, lingerie, leggings and more.

At Broward ENT & Aesthetics, we understand that while there is no one ideal size or shape for the labia, vaginal rejuvenation procedures can improve the confidence and comfort of women who are concerned about their intimate appearance. A delicate and detail-oriented procedure, labiaplasty requires a skilled surgeon such as board-certified otolaryngologist Dr. Wilson DuMornay. With years of experience as an ENT surgeon, Dr. DuMornay has performed many intricate procedures that have improved the health and wellness of hundreds of patients. If labiaplasty is the right choice for you, he can now help you eliminate embarrassment and discomfort with beautiful, natural-looking results.

What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a vaginal rejuvenation procedure that improves the appearance of the female genitalia by reshaping the lips that surround it. Although often done for cosmetic reasons, sometimes the labia are too large and the protruding skin can cause pain, discomfort or chafing, negatively impacting various aspects of life. Oversized labia can also cause embarrassment, make it difficult to wear certain clothing styles and affect your intimate relationships. Labiaplasty can address a variety of these issues and more, including:

  • Pain or discomfort during intercourse
  • Difficulty using tampons
  • Chafing and irritation
  • Reduced sexual sensitivity
  • Feeling self-conscious or embarrassed
  • Hygienic problems

Every woman is unique and there is no ideal standard when it comes to the appearance of your labia, but removing the loose, excess skin that surrounds that vagina with labiaplasty can alleviate unwanted symptoms or concerns. This procedure can address both the labia minora, or the inner vaginal lips, as well as the labia majora, or the fleshy outer lips.

What Can I Expect During the Procedure?

Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure that generally takes an hour to perform, but this may vary depending on your needs. Trimming the labia can be accomplished using a few different techniques and Dr. DuMornay will decide on the best approach for helping you achieve your aesthetic goals. The traditional or trim labiaplasty is often sufficient for most patients, in which the excess skin along the length of the labia minora is removed. This technique leaves minimal scarring and can effectively improve symmetry, eliminate protruding and provide symptom relief for concerns such as chafing or painful intercourse.

In some cases, a wedge technique may be more appropriate for achieving the desired result. This approach removes excess tissue in a triangular or wedge-shaped pattern from the widest part of the labia minora, where it is most prominent. The two sides are then sutured back together, leaving the outer edge of the labia intact to create a smaller, tighter appearance. Whether a trim or wedge approach is right for you will depend on factors such as your concerns, goals and unique anatomy, but both methods can procedure beautiful and natural-looking results when performed by a skilled surgeon such as Dr. DuMornay.

Am I a Good Candidate for Labiaplasty?

The decision to seek labiaplasty is immensely personal and based on numerous factors, but if you experience discomfort or embarrassment due to oversized labia, then you may be a good candidate for the procedure. Although every vulva is different and there is no “normal” size or shape to aim for, labiaplasty can help restore your confidence and improve your overall health and comfort. Some signs that could indicate labiaplasty may be right for you include:

  • Physical symptoms due to labial size or shape
  • You avoid participating in certain activities due to your labia
  • Your self-esteem, intimacy and relationships suffer
  • Postpartum changes have affected your labia
  • You are over the age of 18 and healthy enough for surgery
  • You have realistic expectations and a positive outlook

If you’ve been thinking about labiaplasty and are wondering if the procedure is right for you, Dr. DuMornay and his experienced team can help you decide with an in-person consultation. During this time, Dr. DuMornay will help you understand the procedure and evaluate your concerns, goals and expectations so that you can make an informed decision.

What is the Recovery Like?

Your recovery will depend on the extent of your surgery and which technique was used, but immediately after, you will likely experience some pain, soreness and swelling. You may also have difficulty urinating, blood-tinged drainage or discharge, mild bruising and an asymmetrical appearance, but these symptoms are normal and can be easily managed with ointment, pain medications and proper aftercare. As you begin to heal, these side effects will subside and Dr. DuMornay will follow-up to make sure that your recovery is progressing smoothly.

In the days following your labiaplasty, you should take it easy and focus on keeping the area clean and applying a cold compress as needed. As long as it is not too physically demanding, most patients are able to return to work within seven to 10 days. After about a week, you should be able to resume normal activities but should still refrain from exercise and anything else too strenuous. Intercourse and the use of tampons should be avoided for up to six weeks, and Dr. DuMornay will advise you on when you can resume these activities. To ensure a comfortable and safe recovery, you will be provided with detailed aftercare instructions and be able to contact Dr. DuMornay if you have any questions or concerns.
