Even if you maintain a top-notch skincare regimen, at-home products alone aren’t always enough to achieve your desired facial results. Common culprits such as sun damage, acne and natural aging can affect the appearance of your skin over time, taking away from its overall smoothness and natural glow. Chemical peels are an ideal choice for those seeking nonsurgical skin rejuvenation. These potent treatments reverse skin damage and reduce signs of aging, leaving your skin feeling silkier and more evenly toned.

At Broward ENT & Aesthetics, we strive to offer the latest and most advanced techniques in skin care and medical aesthetics. Our chemical peel services will help you achieve a more youthful appearance by removing age spots, wrinkles and other blemishes from your complexion. Given the procedure’s versatility, your chemical peel options range from a gentle exfoliating treatment with minimal downtime to a deeper, below-the-surface peel with dramatic results. Board-certified otolaryngologist and ENT specialist Dr. Wilson DuMornay will work with you to determine which treatment will help you reach your skin goals.

Preparing for Your Visit

To achieve the best possible results, the following preparation is required seven to 10 days prior to your appointment:

  • Cease use of all topical retinoids, or vitamin A derivative products
  • Refrain from using any glycolic or chemical exfoliants, as well as mechanical exfoliants, such as scrubs
  • Avoid facial waxing, tanning beds and sun exposure without a sunscreen of SPF 30 or greater
  • Inform your provider if you have taken Accutane (oral acne medication) in the past year

Types of Peels

Not all peels are created equal, so it’s important to identify which peel will work best for you.

Light Peel

The most gentle form of treatment, a light peel works by exfoliating the outer layer of skin. This level of peel is ideal for treating dry skin, addressing uneven skin tone and diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Because this is a gentle option, you can get a light peel every few weeks to maintain your skin’s appearance.

Medium Peel

For skin concerns that warrant treatment beyond exfoliation, a medium peel will get the job done. This type of peel goes deeper into the skin, eliminating the outer layer and top of the middle layer of your skin. If your skin issues include coarse skin texture, acne scars and moderate lines or wrinkles, a medium peel is a great rejuvenation option.

Deep Peel

Complex skin issues such as deep wrinkles, scars and brown spots may require a deep peel. This type of peel works by penetrating the lower layer of the skin, producing dramatic results. New skin will grow to replace the old skin that is removed during the procedure, eliminating pre-existing damage. Because this is a more aggressive method, a deep peel will require a longer recovery time.

Perfect Peel

The Perfect Peel is a safe, effective peel for all skin types and ethnicities. It will improve the overall clarity, tone, and texture of your skin. This peel can also reduce hyper-pigmentation, sun damage and Melasma. The Perfect Peel stimulates the production of collagen, resulting in firmer, more youthful skin while also reducing the appearance of pore size. It takes about 7 days to completely heal from this peel.

ZO 3-Step Peel

A multifunctional epidermal peel designed to provide longer-lasting treatment benefits. Utilizing a blend of exfoliants, a 6% concentration of retinol and multi-action agents that stimulate collagen and restore moisture balance, it evens skin texture for softer, smoother, tighter looking skin. In-office treatment followed by an at-home regimen that may require 4-6 week skin pre-conditioning.

The Day of Your Appointment: What to Expect

On the day of your chemcial peel, please arrive 45 minutes before the time of your scheduled visit. The doctor will briefly review the process and pre-treatment photos will be taken. Then the peel itself will take place.

Chemical Peel Aftercare

If required, you will be given a cool compress to apply after treatment. Your skin may be temperature sensitive for a few days following the procedure. This is normal and not cause for alarm.

Peeling and occasional discomfort typically begin shortly after the completion of the procedure, usually within 20 minutes. Depending on the type of peel you’ve had done, the discomfort can be expected to last anywhere from three to 14 days.

You can expect your skin to appear pink for a few hours after the treatment. Makeup may be applied as needed to cover unwanted redness.

After your treatment, it’s important to keep your skin well hydrated. Vitamin C serum use may be resumed after 48 hours, but you should avoid using abrasive or irritating products, such as scrubs or exfoliating sponges, for seven to 10 days. Retinols and glycolic acid should also be avoided for 10 days following the procedure.

Avoid direct sunlight on the treated skin and use a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher for one to two weeks after your treatment.

Potential Side Effects

Discomfort following a chemical peel is generally mild and typically subsides within a few days. Possible side effects include:

  • Slight peeling for three to five days
  • Mild itching, irritation, redness or increased sensitivity
  • Small whiteheads over the treated area

Though rare, crusting can occur. If so, apply a thin layer of an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment such as Polysporin® two to three times per day for three days. Darkening of the skin, called hyperpigmentation, can also occur in some skin types. Please call us if you experience cany concerning reactions.

Ongoing Benefits of Your Treatment

To maintain your results, our skincare specialists can compose a simple, customized skincare program for you to begin before your treatment and continue once your skin has healed. A quality, daily home skincare regimen will ensure that you maximize and maintain the benefits of your treatment. Depending upon the level of peel you’ve received, you may choose to receive another treatment in as little as four weeks. Deeper skin treatments may require six to 12 months before they can be repeated.
