There are few features more striking than pearly white teeth, as a bright smile is universally perceived as being both healthy and youthful. Unfortunately, our teeth often become less white over time, which can be attributed to a number of factors. Genetics, certain medications, and a natural breakdown of the enamel on our teeth can dull the shine of a once-bright smile. In addition to this, habits such as smoking or even consuming stain-inducing food and drinks can result in a yellowed appearance of the teeth.

It’s commonly known that deciduous teeth, or “baby” teeth, are much whiter than the adult teeth that replace them. This is likely why a white smile is commonly seen as both vibrant and youthful.

Fortunately, cosmetic whitening can help restore your younger-looking smile, leaving you with radiant teeth and a major boost of confidence.

At Broward ENT & Aesthetics, we strive to offer the latest and most advanced techniques in teeth whitening. Our in-office whitening services are a painless way to achieve the attractive smile you’re seeking in just a single visit. This rapid procedure yields outstanding results, and board-certified otolaryngologist and ENT surgeon Dr. Wilson DuMornay will work with you to ensure you choose the whitening treatment option that helps you meet your smile goals.

The Benefits of Professional Whitening Services

Just as there are a number of ways to cause discoloration to your teeth, there are also a multitude of options in terms of how to go about whitening them. Though at-home systems can work well, in-office treatments are a quicker, budget-friendly option that can expedite the whitening process. Instead of spending time at home using messy strips or ill-fitting trays, you can have an experienced technician do the work for you, giving you an instantly whiter smile you can show off the moment you walk out the door.

Professional teeth whitening services are recommended to in-home treatments because, despite using a stronger whitening agent, your physician will ensure the rest of your mouth is well protected from the minerals found in the gel. Should any tooth sensitivity arise during the procedure, it will be managed in the office, which is a benefit you will not have with at-home treatments. If you’re looking to use this service in conjunction with at-home treatments, an in-office visit is a great way to jumpstart the process.

Before Your Appointment

While not required, it is recommended you have a full examination and dental cleaning prior to receiving professional teeth whitening services. This will ensure you are indeed a good candidate, and that you do not have any underlying oral issues that could affect the treatment. A dental visit will also work to remove existing plaque and tartar, which can hinder the whitening process.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

When you arrive at your appointment, your mouth will be quickly examined before being prepared for treatment. Once you’re ready, a lip retractor will be used to keep your mouth wide throughout the process. You will be able to bite down on a section of the reactractor in order to relax your jaw muscles. Gauze will also be placed in your mouth to keep the area dry.

Next, precautions will be taken to protect your lips, cheeks, and gums. The gums will be covered with a painted-on dam, which will protect the sensitive tissue of the gums from hydrogen peroxide; this will prevent damage and reduce sensitivity. A protectant gel will also be used to protect from burning of the cheeks and lips.

As the whitening process begins, your teeth will be painted with a brush that will apply the gel to your teeth. A key difference in professional whitening as compared with at-home whitening is the way in which the gel is activated. Your physician will point a light at the gel on your teeth, which causes the oxygen in the gel to transform, allowing it to penetrate below your enamel into the color pigments of the teeth.

The length of the treatment may vary depending upon a few factors, including the color of your teeth at the time of your arrival, as well as the shade you’re looking to achieve. The visit should not exceed one hour.

Possible Risk Factors

Teeth whitening is a safe, common procedure for which most patients are candidates. Though some tooth sensitivity may occur, it should be resolved within one to two days following treatment. There is no evidence teeth whitening will cause damage to the enamel of the teeth, or any other tooth structures. Please be aware before opting for treatment that teeth whitening will not affect nor change the color of veneers, existing crowns, or fillings.

Posttreatment Instructions

Following your appointment, you will be permitted to resume your normal activities. It’s recommended you avoid food or drink with highly pigmented colors, such as red wine or bright-colored fruits and vegetables, for at least 24 hours after your treatment. You may also discuss ways to maintain your results after your visit, such as by using at-home whitening systems, or whitening toothpastes to prevent surface stains. You can expect the effects of your treatment to last anywhere between six months and two years.
