What conditions are treated with vestibular rehab?

Your vestibular system controls your balance. Structures in your inner ear detect information about your motion and position relative to the ground, and then your brain uses that information to tell muscles to adjust as needed to keep your balance.

These are a few examples of conditions that affect your balance:

  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
  • Meniere’s disease
  • Labyrinthitis
  • Vestibular neuritis
  • Labyrinthine infarction

When your inner ear is damaged, you develop dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, and balance problems. Many men and women experience other symptoms caused by their vestibular disorder, such as nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.

As dizziness leads to worries about falling, you become more sedentary. As a result, you develop secondary symptoms such as joint stiffness and loss of muscle strength and stamina.

What is vestibular rehab?

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy is a customized exercise program to reduce vertigo and dizziness, improve your balance, and lower your risk of falls. One way the therapy works is by retraining your brain to overcome inner ear dysfunction by learning to rely on other senses.

At Broward ENT & Aesthetics, you can find innovative therapy options to help you overcome your balance issues with their state-of-the-art Fyzical® Therapy and Balance Center.

Vestibular rehab takes three primary approaches to your exercise program:

  • Habituation: exercises to help dizziness caused by motion and visual stimuli, such as head movement and walking through shopping malls or over shiny floors
  • Gaze stabilization: therapies used when abnormal eye movement makes objects appear to bounce around or to train your brain to use vision to compensate for a damaged inner ear
  • Balance training: various exercises to improve balance when walking, bending, reaching, and turning
