Whether through aging or environmental damage, it’s natural for your skin’s youthful appearance to diminish over the years. Numerous factors add up over time to wreak havoc on your face, leaving you with unevenly textured skin and a less-than-radiant complexion. Fortunately, through a minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure known as microneedling, you can repair the signs of aging and other causes of skin imperfections, restoring a younger appearance to your face.
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, treats skin-related issues by triggering collagen production. The procedure utilizes small needles to prick the skin, causing slight injury, which results in a natural healing response that produces new, collagen-rich tissue.
This treatment is typically used on the face to treat wrinkles, scars and large pores. It can also help reduce the appearance of stretch marks and scars on other parts of the body.
At Broward ENT & Aesthetics, we offer a variety of facial treatments that address aging skin. Microneedling is ideal for patients looking to boost their appearance with smoother, firmer skin and a more even skin texture. This procedure is safe and effective, and board-certified otolaryngologist and ENT surgeon Dr. Wilson DuMornay will work with you to ensure your treatment is personalized to meet your skin goals.
Microneedling has been proven effective in treating the following facial concerns:
Microneedling may also be used to treat concerns in other areas of the body, such as stretch marks on the thighs or abdomen.
While there are countless skincare products that can improve your skin on a surface level, the real reason behind your skin’s inability to renew itself as you get older is a decrease in collagen and elastin. These proteins are vital building blocks that are necessary for healthy, youthful skin.
In a microneedling treatment, a device equipped with tiny needles is passed over the surface of your skin, creating evenly-spaced micro-punctures. The punctures are so small that they’re nearly invisible to the eye, but they are enough to activate your body’s injury response. Healing the micro-injuries leads to a boost in the production of collagen and elastin and heightened cell turnover.
Speak with Dr. DuMornay prior to your procedure to discuss your desired results. Please note you may not be a candidate for microneedling if you:
Before treatment, you may be advised to stop using certain medications and skincare ingredients, including:
Inform Dr. DuMornay about any medications you are taking to reduce the risk of side effects from the procedure.
Before your microneedling procedure, a topical anesthetic will be applied to the treatment area to reduce pain. Once the anesthetic takes effect, small pricks will be made in your skin with a sterile tool. The tool will be moved evenly across your skin to ensure the new tissue that grows will be even as well. When the microneedling is complete, Dr. DuMornay may apply a calming serum to your skin.
Microneedling is a safe, low-risk procedure. Immediately following the treatment, you may notice minor skin irritation in the treated area, followed by a few days of redness. Other possible side effects include:
Contact Broward ENT & Aesthetics if you are experiencing any of these effects or are in significant discomfort following your microneedling treatment.
Because microneedling is a minimally-invasive procedure, you will likely require very little downtime following your treatment. In fact, you may not need any downtime at all. Though you may notice some skin irritation and redness, please be aware this is your body’s natural response to the small injuries made in the skin and it is a normal part of the healing process.
Your skin will work quickly to repair the micro-injuries and produce new, healthy tissue. After the first 24 hours have passed, you may apply makeup to counter any redness, and should use sunscreen to protect your skin. You may see some initial benefits soon after your treatment. However, the most profound improvements will not be apparent until your body has time to produce new supplies of collagen and elastin that revitalize your skin.
Microneedling is most often performed over the course of multiple sessions to achieve and maintain patients’ desired results. Dr. DuMornay will discuss your individual goals to determine the best plan for treatment. Please know that complementary procedures, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, are available to boost the effects of basic microneedling.
While traditional microneedling is successful in treating skin deficiencies caused by environmental damage or aging, PRP can provide even more dramatic results, helping you achieve your desired outcome more quickly. During a typical microneedling session, a special roller or device with needles is used to penetrate the skin, stimulating collagen and elastin production. PRP can be added as an injection or topical treatment to improve healing and decrease the amount of redness and swelling you may experience after a microneedling procedure.
Sometimes called a “vampire facial,” PRP therapy uses your own blood to maximize the benefits of your treatment. PRP therapy is performed by drawing a small amount of your blood (typically from the arm), which is then spun in a special piece of equipment to separate the plasma from the other components of the blood. The platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is then applied to the microneedling treatment area to stimulate faster collagen production.
Like microneedling, PRP is a low-risk treatment, and most patients are good candidates for this procedure.
