Imagine waking up each morning with long, luxurious lashes that give you a refreshed look from the moment you open your eyes. With an endless stream of lash-boosting products hitting the market each year, you may be wondering if you should continue searching for a “miracle product” or try lash extensions instead. The truth is, many lash products promise unrealistic results. Mascaras and falsies may enhance your lashes for a day at work or a night out, but lash extensions are a longer-lasting way to get the length and volume you desire without adding a step to your daily makeup routine.

At Broward ENT & Aesthetics, we proudly offer an array of cosmetic procedures that enhance our clients’ beauty and confidence. Lash extensions can add fullness and length to your natural lashes, and can be tailored to suit your aesthetic preferences. This simple procedure yields quick results that will take your lashes from dull and lackluster to beautifully lush.

What Are Lash Extensions?

Lash extensions can be made of either synthetic or natural hair fibers. During a lash extension treatment, these lashes will be individually applied to the base of your natural lashes with surgical glue. The lashes are applied one by one to ensure precision and give you a natural, amplified look.

Compared to lash lifts, which apply a semi-permanent curl to your natural lashes, extensions achieve a more dramatic transformation but require more upkeep. Lash extension clients must diligently care for their eyes once the extensions are applied and will need to return for regular touch-up treatments, or “fills.” If you do not adhere to the follow-up guidelines, your extensions may shed sooner than expected.

How often you will need to schedule a fill depends upon your natural eyelash growth cycle, as well as how carefully you take care of your lashes. With regular fills, your lash boost will last indefinitely.

Before Your Appointment

All lash extensions are not created equal, so it’s important to do your research before you book an appointment. Like strip lashes, which vary in length and thickness, lash extensions come in many different forms. You’ll want to decide prior to your appointment whether you would prefer a natural-looking set of extensions or if you’re seeking a more dramatic look. Think of it like choosing a hairstyle before heading to the salon – you’ll want to find a look that suits your features and your overall style.

The Application Process

When you arrive at your appointment, our lash specialist will prepare your eyes for the lash application. Your lower lashes will be taped gently to your skin and hydrating eye pads will be placed on top. This will prevent the glue from touching the lower part of your eye as the lashes are applied. Depending upon the look you’re going for, anywhere from 60 to 120 individual lashes will be applied during your first visit. You can expect a new, full set of lashes to take somewhere between 90 to 180 minutes to apply.

Risk Factors

Lash extensions and fills are safe procedures, and both pose minimal risk. Following the treatment, some patients may experience:

  • Irritation or redness
  • Infection
  • Allergic reactions
  • Itching
  • Clogged hair follicles

While these reactions are rare, you are encouraged to contact our office if you experience these symptoms.

Aftercare Instructions

The following practices are recommended to keep your lashes looking their best after the initial application and between fills:

  • Be careful when washing your eyes and the area around them. Excessive movement of your lashes will increase the risk of shedding or twisting.
  • If you choose to use mascara, consider opting for a non-waterproof version of your favorite brand. Mascara that is difficult to remove can snag your lashes, causing them to shed prematurely.
  • Refrain from using oil-based cleansers and makeup removers, which can cause a breaking down of the glue.
  • Avoid rubbing your face vigorously with a towel, or pressing your face hard into your pillow.
  • Pressure from water in the shower can loosen your lashes. Try to avoid a direct stream of water into your face.
  • Be mindful of your skincare routine. Any oil-based products, or unclean tools, can cause a breakdown of the lash glue.
  • Consider using a cotton swab dipped in makeup remover to take off makeup applied along the lash line.
  • Comb through your lashes with a dry mascara wand at least once per day to maintain your look. Ideally, you will do so in the morning and as needed throughout the day. Be gentle as you comb, as too much tugging can loosen the lashes and cause them to fall out.

Remember, adhering to these guidelines will help preserve your look, but fills will still be required as upkeep. You should expect to have your lashes touched up every two to three weeks to keep them looking fresh.
