Dermaplaning is a noninvasive physical exfoliation treatment that removes dead skin cells and vellus hair, commonly referred to as “peach fuzz,” with a sterile surgical scalpel. Although it may sound as simple as “shaving your face.”

Dermaplaning is an effective, dermatologist-backed technique for dealing with some of your most frustrating skin issues, like dullness, fine wrinkles and textural irregularities. This gentle treatment is a great option for bringing a quick glow to your face without the use of harsh exfoliators.

Pretreatment Instructions

To make the most of your dermaplaning session, we recommend the following pretreatment plan:

  • Notify your skincare specialist if you are on any medications (oral and/or topical) or have any medical conditions
  • Avoid shaving, peels, waxing or aggressive exfoliators one week prior to your dermaplaning treatment
  • Let your Broward ENT & Aesthetics provider know if you have been diagnosed with cold sores or herpes simplex
  • Wait at least one week after receiving Botox or dermal fillers to receive a dermaplaning treatment

The Procedure

The dermaplaning tool looks similar to a blade that would be used to remove body hair. The edge is held at a 45-degree angle and slowly dragged across the skin, picking up dead skin cells, unwanted hair and other debris as it goes. There is no discomfort or pain during the procedure. All you need to do is sit back and relax while your skincare specialist maneuvers the blade and adjusts the position of your head. Please remain still, refrain from chewing gum during the procedure and restrict talking unless necessary.

Posttreatment Instructions

Dermaplaning is a gentle treatment with minimal side effects. Mild peeling, redness and blotchiness may occur in the initial hours after the procedure. You may also feel a slight tingling sensation when using skincare products for the first two days. For the best results:

  • Use a gentle cleanser and apply a moisturizer twice daily for at least one week after treatment
  • Be mindful of sun exposure and wear sunscreen daily for two weeks — if you must be in the sun, use SPF 30 or higher, reapply often, wear a wide-brimmed hat and seek shade when possible
  • Avoid excessive heat (heavy workouts, saunas, etc.) for three days posttreatment
  • Avoid chlorine for the first 24 hours
  • Avoid facial hair waxing for at least one week
  • Do not schedule appointments for Botox and dermal fillers for two to three weeks
  • Do not pick, scratch or aggressively rub the treated area
  • No exfoliating scrubs, polishes or harsh brushes should be used for seven to 14 days
  • Do apply serums — absorption levels will be elevated
