What is IPL therapy?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy is a noninvasive treatment that your health specialist can use to treat a variety of conditions, such as:

  • Age spots
  • Wrinkles
  • Freckles
  • Unwanted hair
  • Birthmarks
  • Sun damage
  • Spider veins
  • Varicose veins
  • Rosacea
  • Broken blood vessels

What’s the difference between laser treatment and IPL treatment?

Intense pulsed light therapy works similarly to laser treatment. Both use light energy that is converted into heat to remove unwanted spots and hairs. While laser treatment uses a single, highly focused wavelength, IPL therapy uses several less focused and scattered wavelengths.

The result is that IPL therapy is a gentler, less damaging treatment. While both treatments can penetrate to the second layer of your skin, IPL therapy does so without damaging the top layer.

What happens during IPL treatment?

During IPL treatment, your health specialist begins by cleaning your skin. After that, they prime your skin with a cooling gel. Once they’ve applied the cooling gel and given you a pair of dark glasses to wear, they begin pressing the IPL instrument against your skin.

The instrument emits weak light pulses that treat your skin. During treatment, you may experience some slight stinging. The procedure normally takes around 30 minutes, and you should be able to return to work immediately after treatment. You may even be able to apply makeup afterward.

How should I prepare for IPL therapy?

To prepare for IPL therapy, you should treat your skin gently for at least two weeks prior to your treatment. This means avoiding certain things, such as:

  • Waxing
  • Tanning
  • Direct sunlight
  • Products with vitamin A, such as glycolic acid
  • Aspirin, ibuprofen, and other drugs that increase your risk of bleeding
