What are common conditions that require head and neck surgery?

Dr. DuMornay can perform several head and neck procedures, including tonsillectomy with the removal of the adenoids for children, surgeries for cancers affecting the head and neck area, and a thyroidectomy for issues concerning the thyroid gland. Also, Dr. DuMornay offers several head and neck surgeries conveniently in-office.

What types of cancer affect the head and neck?

Dr. DuMornay is recognized for his surgical skill when removing cancerous tumors of the head and neck, which includes tumors in your throat, nose, mouth, and sinuses.

The five primary types of head and neck cancer are:

  • Salivary gland cancer
  • Nasopharyngeal cancer
  • Oral and oropharyngeal cancer
  • Nasal cavity and sinus cancer
  • Laryngeal cancer

When do children need a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (TNA)?

Dr. DuMornay may recommend TNA when children have recurring tonsillitis or enlarged tonsils and adenoids.

Enlarged tonsils and adenoids

When the tonsils and adenoids get too inflamed and swollen, they can block the nasal passageway, making it hard to breathe or swallow, and contribute to obstructive sleep apnea.

Recurring infections

On average, children have one or two episodes of tonsillitis (inflamed tonsils) yearly. When your child has more frequent infections, Dr. DuMornay evaluates their overall health and determines whether a TNA will help prevent infections.

When do you need a thyroidectomy?

The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate your metabolism and affect nearly every system in your body, from your heart rate to your cholesterol levels.

You may need a thyroidectomy to remove part or all of your thyroid gland for the following conditions:

  • Thyroid cancer: the most common reason the thyroid gland is removed
  • Goiter: a noncancerous, enlarged thyroid gland that may interfere with breathing or swallowing
  • Hyperthyroidism: an overactive thyroid that doesn’t respond to medication may be surgically removed
  • Thyroid nodules: nodules may need surgical excision if they’re too large, cancerous, or toxic (overproduce thyroid hormone)

Which head and neck surgeries are commonly performed in the office?

Dr. DuMornay performs the following procedures in the office:

Myringotomy with tubes

Dr. DuMornay uses this surgery to prevent ear infections by inserting ear tubes that drain excess fluid, ventilate your ear, and regulate ear pressure.

Endoscopic sinus surgery

An endoscope is a long, thin tool that’s gently threaded through your nose, where it’s used to perform surgery to treat chronic sinusitis, remove polyps, and make structural repairs. Endoscopic sinus surgery is performed primarily for Humana® Medicaid patients.

Tracheostomy

Surgery to let you breathe through a hole in the front of your neck may be done to prepare for head and neck surgery, when you need a breathing machine, or when your airway is blocked.
